The journey to Awakened Lounge, LLC has been quite an interesting one, but an inspiring and humbling one to stay the least. It started in August 2010 when our founder was in her last semester at the wonderful Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. She had to do a senior project and decided to do the eight-page magazine option.
Those that were featured in the magazine wondered if they could get a copy; however, to print out several copies was quite expensive for a college student, but that is when the founder launched Urban Centric Magazine online. From there she started with two of her college peers that wanted to be writers and one of her co-workers from Metro Boyz Entertainment started a column. They promoted the site and articles on Facebook and from there more writers came on board from New Orleans, Detroit, and Nigeria (yes, Nigeria located Africa!).
To sum things up, things were booming from 2010 to 2013 until the founder paused and a few writers went their own way. The name was then changed from Urban Centric to Sophisticated Urban Minds to better serve urban youth. The team released a collection of 6 hard copy, quarterly magazines. However, something was still missing. There wasn’t a sense of purpose, so from 2013 to 2016 things were on hold again and the founder focused more on her personal career and got busy being on red carpets, interviewing A-list celebs, and becoming heavily involved in the public relations scene.
Then in July 2016, God planted purpose inside the heart and soul of the founder and Purposely Awakenedwas born. Since 2016, Purposely Awakened has gained a strong social following from 2,000 to 19,400 and has a strong and dedicated team of writers, healers, vloggers, poets, and entrepreneurs that are stationed in New York; Houston, Texas; Camden, New Jersey; Detroit, Michigan; Birmingham, Alabama; and of course, Atlanta, Georgia.
Now let’s speed up to the present. 2020 has been all about VISION; that 20/20 vision and it’s not a coincidence that the founder’s birthday this is 11/20/20 (But God) and 10 years later she is in transition back to Atlanta (permanently). In 2010, she moved back to California and now 10 years later she is preparing her move back to Georgia and just following God’s overall plan for not only her life, but for the purpose and mission of the business. Awakened Lounge is called to be stationed and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia…. the Black Mecca for rising Black businesses and businesses of color.
But let’s get back to the 20/20 vision…as of September 2020, Awakened Lounge, LLC is now the PARENT of Purposely Awakened. Awakened Lounge was created to bring healing to creatives of color. As creatives, our burnout is TOO REAL. Others depend on us to create, which is our passion and purpose, but when we are unbalanced, we then tend to get uninspired. So the Awakened Lounge is the happy hour hot spot where creatives of color can come to recharge, recreate, and collaborate so we can continue to change the narrative of the culture.
