Designer Profile: adidas Yeezy Collection by Kanye West

This year’s New York Fashion Week promised to be one to remember from the start with the most highly sought after and critically acclaimed designers all presenting new collections once again changing the landscape of the fashion world. However, arguably no collection was more heavily anticipated and clamored over than the official revealing of Kanye West’s Yeezy collection with global giant Adidas. After a highly successful run with Nike, which resulting in the creation and release of the two fastest and highest selling sneakers in the history of the company, and yet no commitment from the company for an apparel collection, Kanye’s $10 million signing with the Adidas brand and subsequent announcement of the Yeezy shoe and apparel collection has left the fashion world in a frenzy until the final revelation of just what exactly Kanye and the revamped Adidas team have been working on for the past year.

In attendance for this momentous occasion were some of the biggest names in fashion and pop culture including the entire Kardashian family, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jay Z, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Diddy and several celebrity stylists. The presentation itself was reportedly entirely the brainchild of Kanye West, which is apparent through the minimalism of theatrics throughout the show and the entirely white backdrop to draw attention to the earth toned color scheme that was a theme in the collection. Pieces including flesh colored stocking, oversized jackets, ripped shirts and detailed yet monochromatic coats that directly spoke to the current style we have become accustomed to seeing worn by Kanye in recent memory.

In comparison to the Avant Garde, extreme expressions presented by other designers at NYFW, the simplicity of the collection has left many fashion critics unimpressed, although that same simplicity in an apparel brand may also prove to be quite beneficial to the international market Adidas represents who seek ready to wear pieces. What did leave many critics with some level of satisfaction is the showing of unity and diversity in the presentation of the collection with models of all races and shapes representing the brand as Kanye’s latest single from his upcoming album set the tone of the show. All in all the show has already proven to be a success as the first product, and most anticipated from the collection in the form of the Yeezy 350 Boost sneaker, has already sold out of its early shipment with pairs selling for over $1500 on eBay. With a newly announced collection with superstar designer Jeremy Scott also in the works Kanye is once again defying the odds.
