Exploring the ‘Random Ax of Charlie’
The music industry is one of the top, competitive industries to break into. Some never make it, others make it but don’t survive it and a few survive it and keep standing. So, what’s the key ingredient to being in the that “few” who withstand it all and thrive in the industry?
The key is standing out. Those who strive in the industry set a brand for themselves, and are able to grow a fan base of people from all walks of life. Songwriter and Songstress Charlie Vox is the true epitome of a musical icon who is branding herself within the industry. Her EP, ‘Random Ax of Charlie‘ showcases her versatility to draw in any crowd.
So who is Charlie Vox? Charlie hails from New Jersey by the way of Philadelphia, PA. She wrote the song ‘Final Goodbye‘, which was hand selected by Jay Brown, President of ROC Nation, for R&B singer Rihanna’s album “A Girl Like Me” (2006). In addition, Charlie has also written songs with songwriting team The Conglomerate for top producers Stargate(Ne-Yo, Shakira), Kosine of “The Intern” (Nicki Minaj, Big Sean) and Steve McKie (Jill Scott, Estelle). In 2012, Charlie spent most of the year touring with Estelle.

What inspired you to get into the music industry?
My love for music and my mom also realized that I could sing. I was involved in talent shows, pageants and the choir. Music has also helped me build me self-confidence.
How has the transition been from writing songs for other artists to now solely focusing on writing songs for yourself?
Interesting. (laughs) I never lost focus of being an artist. Some tend to get side tracked when it comes to song writing and being an artist. I never lost focus and never stopped writing for myself.
Your EP, ‘BPMs (The ANTI-Mixtape)’ , is very versatile and has a bit of everything from Reggae, Hip Hop, Soul, Alternative, and Blues. What inspired you to create this EP?
‘Random Ax of Charlie’ is all about mixing every type of genre. I wanted to give the public a taste of who I am by breaking down my life, as well as giving them something that they can also relate to. After completing the EP it turned out to be more than just a mix tape, and more of a personal project. This is the appetizer to my next big project, which is my self debut album ‘Random Ax of Charlie’.
So when is the next project due to release?
Within the next couple of months.
What are your plans from now to the next five years?
To continue writing and to collaborate with more producers. I also want to get into acting and into Television. There’s so many ideas that run across my mind. I want to accomplish everything that is on my heart. (laughs)
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love spending time with friends, driving, going to the mall. I like to just live. (laughs). I love simple things like that.
If you weren’t in the music industry, what would you career be and why?
(LAUGHS) Okay one is one that I would consider doing and the other one seems like it would be fun. The first would be a teacher. I love students. I was actually a high school history teacher for three years. I was more of a mentor than a teacher. I was able to keep the students on the right track. The second career would be a forensic scientist, like on CSI (laughs). It seems like a really interesting career and I love watching stuff like that. (laughs).
What is your advice to those who love to write and want to break into the industry as a songwriter?
This industry is definitely an interesting one, with no rules, but you can make them up as you go along. I would say do what makes you happy, and be truthful to your talent and the right song will make it.
Are there any mottos or quotes that you live by?
(laughs) My grandfather used to always say, “If your money holds out your luck will change,” which means just do it and go after your dreams.
