KweliTV Founder, DeShuna Elisa Spencer, Speaks on Inspiration Behind Platform Purpose

The film industry is one of the highest ranking industries, but it is also very hard to get into, especially for filmmakers of color. This is one of the reasons why DeShuna Elsia Spencer started KweliTV.

After becoming frustrated with the same tired stereotypes, lack of diversity in TV shows and movies, as well as the few choices of content that focused on issues important to her, Spencer started her journey of launching her highly rated online platform for filmmakers of color.

“Some networks recycle the same black movies and comedy TV shows from the 80s through early 2000s,” she explained. “Don’t get me wrong, I love a good 90s black romantic comedy or a black sitcom like the rest of you, but I wanted more. And have you watched The History Channel lately? Outside of Black History Month in February, historical content about black people is severely lacking.

The main void that KweliTV is filling is bringing more content that empowers, enlightens and entertains our audience. I recently interviewed the young entrepreneur where she discussed more on her inspiration to start the platform.
