Model Laura Fry proves that being a working mother doesn’t have to stop your workflow

Established model, actress and Atlanta resident Laura Fry is proof that being a working mother not only has it’s perks, but it’s also motivation to stay focused in your craft. Fry who has previously worked with The Bailey Agency recently sat down with us to talk about her modeling career and what the forecast looks like for her in 2017.

Thank you so much for taking time out to be interviewed for Purposely Awakened! We are so excited to hear from you! Let’s talk about your past experiences in the modeling and print industry.

I’ve always had a love for fashion, and it has always been a desire to model since I was younger. I love to watch fashion shows and models bring designers creativity to life. My first modeling opportunity is when I moved to Atlanta. I met a lady by the name of Yolanda Zellous she owned a modeling agency for all size models. She recruited me, and booked me for my first gig and I’ve been working since.

The modeling industry has changed. Do you ever feel body conscious or that you have to be a part of the norm where the smaller model is seen as better?

No I do not feel body conscious, I feel that there is a need for models of all sizes. Now more so then in the past, you see a lot more curvy models in the industry.

Speaking of models, we hear that you have a clothing line that you are currently revamping for the woman who may be in the middle size wise. Tell our readers a little bit about the line.

My clothing boutique is centered for women sizes 6-16. Not a focus on plus size, but a middle range. What a lot of people don’t know is that models are considered normal or regular sizes for the majority of the industry from sizes 0-8. Sizes 10 and up is considered plus size now. Which is crazy to me, when there are small, medium and large sizes right? When did we go from small sizes to PLUS?? My brand is called Maxx which is a focus on the middle size woman. Medium, Average, eXtraordinary (XX) women. Some of the slogans for the brand are “Not Petite and Not Plus” “Curvy doesn’t mean Plus” Just to give an idea of the brand.

In your opinion, do you think social media has made it easier for models to get noticed through forms such as Instagram? Also, do you think because of those platforms, it has made it harder for the more established model to stay relevant?

Yes, I think it has made it easier to break into the industry; you don’t have to go the traditional route of finding an agency to get work. You can find a lot of modeling gigs posted on social media and can submit yourself for the casting. I don’t believe it has made it harder for a established model to stay relevant, It is still highly recommended to eventually sign with a agency/manager because all jobs are not posted on social media. A lot of the nationally recognized companies hire their models through agencies.

What are some highlights in your career?

I’ve been able to work with a lot of well-known names in the industry as far as acting roles and modeling. To name a few, Tyler Perry Studios, Coco Studios, BET Network and The Cynthia Bailey Agency School of Fashion.

Tell our readers a little bit about your background in acting. What shows, films have you appeared in?

BET Network “The Game” and “Let’s Stay Together” and Tyler Perry’s “Love Thy Neighbor”, and “For better or For Worse”. For Movies: Switching Lanes [and] Kill the Messenger.

When you are not busy working on your business or brand as a model, what do you enjoy doing?

Spending time with my family, shopping and if I lived closer to the beach…that would definitely be a place I can relax and enjoy some me time.

Do you have any favorite designers?

Not necessarily a favorite, but there are some brands I like, Eva Mendes has a nice brand of clothing out now. Also I like Antonio Melani, Louis Vuitton and Celine.

Any advice for the up and coming model?

My advice is to stay current and educated in your field. Treat your modeling career serious just as if you were going to school for it. Make sure you are researching, taking classes, and staying current on fashion trends and what’s relevant in the industry. Network with other models and experts in the field.
