‘Queen Sugar’ Shows the Dynamics and Importance of Family

As we become adults, we move and start our own families. For some families, it will seem like you hardly ever see or hear from your siblings because they are far away and in hindsight you start to feel a distance between them and yourself. This one of the dynamics that I picked up while watching the first two episodes of Ava Duvernay’s new series Queen Sugar, with Oprah Winfrey which premiered this past Tuesday and Wednesday on the OWN Network.

In the series siblings, Ralph Angel, Charley, and Nova are forced to come together and keep the family legacy alive after the sudden and unexpected death of their father. Each sibling had their own life’s trials occurring but they were able to drop and pause their own personal issues to strengthen their bond as a family.

All too often, people especially our Black people, let our own issues override into the family to where we forget the importance of our family and how much we need them in our lives. Family can be taken for granted at times, and Queen Sugar reminds us how to appreciate the family that we have because there are those that do not have anyone to support them or that they can go to when the going gets tough.
