Woman of Influence: Mayra Energy, Uses Radio to Influence the Community to Change

Can you give myself and the readers a brief introduction of who you are?

Of course! My name is Mayra Energy. I started my career off in Arizona and recently moved to Los Angeles to grow and expand my brand. In Arizona, we have a very talented and constantly growing independent music scene. I am fortunate to be able to be connected with the top artists from our state. At ikon radio, we have provided a platform to showcase the artists and their music, through radio play, live interviews and events. I was brought on to be the face and co-host of ikon radio, along with the founder DJ John Blaze, a well-known and respected figure in the Arizona music community. We have an app that can be downloaded free on any phone, you will hear top quality independent Arizona artists, as well as other talented artists from different states.

What influenced you to become a radio personality?

I have always loved the idea of having a strong platform and being a person of influence. I started out by working on a TV show called MiVidz, which also features independent artist. I was head of A&R there, given my relationships with the artists and my relationships with industry professionals in Los Angeles. I also hosted live events and the people of ikon took notice. I received a phone call asking me if I would like to be the face of ikon and really help set this new station off. I accepted the offer and it turned out to be a great choice. It’s been a very positive experience so far.

Is being a radio personality a fun career?

Being a radio personality is a fun career, especially now since it’s more visual, through live streaming and YouTube. Also, being able to help other people receive the attention and support for their passions is very rewarding.

How long have you been with the station?

I have been with ikon radio since the very first day, a little over 2 years ago.

Are you one of the initial founders of the station? DJ John Blaze and I were the first two original hosts. He is also the founder of the station. We now have a whole team of DJ’s and radio personalities and we are happy to be continuously growing!

Tell me the preparation process you go through before interviewing guests?Most of the time it is an artist I already know or that I happened to find out about. We learn about their new projects, upcoming shows, and we have them submit their music to us prior to the show so we can play it on the air. Aside from that, just always making sure I am camera ready, since our episodes are filmed.

Do you ever have controversial guest in the show that just rub you the wrong way?

For the most part everyone is pretty cool. We have not had any drama.

Do you see yourself getting into television in the future?

Absolutely! One of my goals is to have my own show and to be an influential positive TV personality.

Any advice you can give to any future millennial radio personality? Make sure that you are well rounded in topics, and that you can carry an intelligent conversation or at least turn conversations into a subject of substance. Try to separate yourself from the norms of society and find your own identity so that you can stand out as being your best self. Connect with industry people, be respectful to everyone and always be willing to grow and accept opportunities to grow.
